✦ About the Dabu Craft & Natural Indigo

The Dabu technique is one of Rajasthan's most treasured textile traditions. A thick resist paste — made from black clay (kali mitti), lime, gum, and wheat chaff — is hand-applied over the fabric using carved wooden blocks. The fabric is then dipped in natural indigo vats, and when the resist paste is washed away, it reveals crisp, white geometric patterns against a deep, luminous indigo blue ground.

The designer pallu is created using multiple block layers, requiring exceptional skill and precision — each pallu is a miniature work of art. Natural indigo, extracted from the Indigofera tinctoria plant, is one of the oldest dyes known to humanity — celebrated for its deep, rich colour that becomes even more beautiful and characterful with every wash. No two sarees are ever exactly alike — the slight variations are the hallmark of authentic Dabu handwork.
